I am just currious of how people got into the music that they do listen to now. Alot of the obsure bands that I do listen to I heard from various comp CD's and soundtracks from the 90's. I was a Nirvana fan in the early 90's, and then got into NIN alot right before the downward spiral came out. After that I started buying lots of comp cd's that had bands that I liked and it eventually got harder and harder to find new stuff that I like (Think that I got old or something). I heard KMFDM one of the only times MTV played them and was hooked from the start. There is only one cd store within 60 miles of where I live and it rarely carries items that I like. Also my friends have rarely found music that I like. Lately I have stated likeing some Noise bands like Manufactura and Defragmentation. Any way I am more curious of how others have gotten to this taste of Music>>

A combo of a shitload of soundtracks, for me. Most credited: The Crow soundtrack and Mortal Kombat.

My parents used to play a lot of music loud but I was never into it then. I'd say about 1992 I got into MTV. In 1994 I got into NIN, Marilyn Manson, Type O Negative, PWEI, etc... Turtles music was great then you could listen to anything for a good amount of time. Most record stores blow now. But kids have the net now so they don't have excuses for not worshiping crap from Sony!

I got into KMFDM and Rammstein from the Mortal Kombat soundtracks and from there I got into a lot of other related bands.

I'm an old fogey, so it goes pretty far back. I was 11 or 12 and living in Vancouver ('83 or '84) when a friend of mine loaned me a tape he had just bought. It was Remission by Skinny Puppy and I was hooked instantly. From there, I bought music by people Skinny Puppy worked with - that's how I got into Ministry - or just from recommendations from people working in the record stores in downtown Vancouver. Somewhere along the way, I picked up Angst when it was released. I think I was buying a Ministry or Skinny Puppy album when the guy at the store told me I might like KMFDM as well.
Now, I use sites like allmusic.com to find other artists that are similar to what I listen to. Never a shortage of new stuff to listen to that way.

About like I though. Too bad more people aren't into music instead of just radio crap . If so it might not be so hard to find good albums. When I go into the local record store to have them order things, usually only about 30% of the stuff is still available . And sometimes that stuff takes about 2 months worth of waiting to arrive . I did get a copy of KMFDM's Japanese "Symbols" not too long ago from the store. I think that he said there was something like 20 left in stock in the US. Also I got a copy of "Wrecked" on cassette. Both of those should have been totally unavailable years ago.

The Matrix soundtrack put me onto Ministry in 1999/2000, and then I checked out a CD review book in the library. The section for Ministry mentioned KMFDM and Skinny Puppy. A bit later I found a second hand copy of Angst in my old favourite CD shop (not there any more, incidentally) and I've pretty much never looked back. Obviously that's the short version of the story, since there was the whole Rammstein 'side quest' which has gotten me into bands like Oomph! and Megaherz, and other German industrial acts.
Right now most of the metal I've been getting into has been thanks to my good friend Rohan 'Mr. Broadband'. And incidentally that has led me to buying CDs (I bought Chaosphere by Meshuggah just yesterday, courtesy of Mum and my birthday gift of money) so whinging record companies can fuck off so far as I'm concerned.
