PETA: Women Are Not Whales!
The animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) recently put up a billboard in Jacksonville, Florida, that depicts an overweight woman in a skimpy bikini with a beach scene in the background. The sign says, in giant white letters, "Save the Whales," with smaller red letters beneath that read, "Lose the Blubber: Go Vegetarian."
Surprisingly enough, PETA is defending their decision to install this tasteless billboard in one of the nation's "fattest" cities. PETA spokeswoman and campaigner Virginia Fort said the billboard sends an important message about the nation’s rising obesity rate and merely suggests vegetarianism as a way to combat it. “It’s empowering for women. All consumers can take something from this. It’s a message everyone can relate to; many people in this country struggle with weight issues,” Fort said. She said vegetarians with healthy lifestyles weigh 10 to 15 pounds less than people who eat meat.
News Flash: Vegetarians come in all shapes and sizes!
Yes, a plant-based diet can be a very healthy alternative to eating meat, if it is properly planned. However, it is never acceptable to recruit people to your cause by intimidating women, regardless of your "intentions."
PETA has done a lot of amazing work in the domain of animal rights, but sometimes it seems like they forget about their incessant cruelty to humans, via hurtful messages such as this one.
This group was created to promote a healthy body image for women (and men) of all shapes and sizes, whether they are vegetarians, vegans, fruitarians, omnivores, or any combination thereof. Anyone is welcome to join, but please be respectful of other members. Invite your friends!
