I can't fucking stand this band. They're an amalgamation of everything that is shitty about metal, and their singer has one of the cheesiest voices I've ever heard.

They're fairly amusing to me They blatantly use 80s nintendo sounds. I do give one of the guitarists credit for doing guitar flutter on one song. Few guitarists do this technique like Vai, Satriani, Petrucci, Skolnick, etc...

This is true,* but the thing is... they don't give a shit. The whole point was to be as preposterous as possible. * Actually, it isn't, not in any real sense, but this is too big a topic to get into here. Technical wankery does not make a good guitarist.

Technical wankery does not make a good guitarist. So none of those guitarists have composed good songs or know what they're doing at all right? Something unique from time to time isn't wankery. To me the same of riff over and over in a song from start to finish is wankery.

Here is a chop'd up version of this track...
It starts to get amusing at the 2:58 mark

So none of those guitarists have composed good songs Satriani might have at some point. Petrucci probably could if he tried. Knowing what they're doing isn't an issue (also, that looks like a straw man to me). I know they know that much, but all they do is show off, really. With Petrucci this isn't that much of a problem, since he is in a band full of show offs, but Vai in particular really grates on me. Also, your definition of musical wankery needs revising. Using one riff is just being shitty, not wanky, since it isn't pretentious.

Is Punk Not Pretentious They wank thru a set of twenty 3 minute long songs believing that their simple never changed song structures are actually worth sitting thru...

Depends on the punk. Some punk bands put on airs, but many just suck for the sake of it, which, again, is stupid rather than wanky.
Also, I'm not sure why you bought up punk.

Lil Wayne is awesome. I love that song Lollipop. I find it to be very sci-fi for whatever reason.

We worked with a guy named Wayne before that was supermegagrumpy and partially because he limped (injury he neglected to fully rehab/recover from). We would say his name out loud Wwwaaayyynnneee! He'd grumble fucker you assholes fucking die fuckers etc... Then gradually we started to call him lil' wayne. That really pissed him off. Lil Wayne is also a term for a dude with a little one down there...

Man, listen to that song Lollipop. Seriously, its like Clark Ashton Smith given musical form. Everything about it is alienating and terrifying. I love it.

It is NOT awesome. That song is the devil. Lil Fuckface can NOT sing/rap. I don't think I've ever heard a rapper with a more annoying voice.

And I do find it funny that this has turned into a Lil Wayne thread. We are all so good at going off topic.

Rap isn't a talent. Anyone with rhythm can do it.

I call bullshit on Zer0's assertion. Listen to Saul Williams and then 50 Cent and tell me that neither of them is more talented than the other. The winner is Saul, by the way.
Also, UJJJ, that isn't the point. He doesn't really rap, so much as he drones. Combine that with the muted production (at least on the one song I've heard) and he emerges as more of an anti-rapper. I know Lollipop is about shawtys in da club smoking P or whatever the fuck its about, but it's totally awesome that a song like that can be made by a mainstream guy and become really popular. It's nothing at all like what the other popular hip hopperers are doing.

Saul Williams is a fucking genius. Genius.Really, there are still some very talented rappers out there today. You just have to look beyond MTV. Saul, El-P, and Sage Francis just to name a few.

It's catchy. It may sound good. But it's not vocal talent. That's all I'm saying.
