MMA Fighter Matt Lindland Wins Oregon GOP Nomination
Team Quest founder and new Affliction signee Matt Lindland (Pictures) survived a tense night Tuesday and weeks of negative campaigning by the opposition to win the Republican nomination for Oregon House District 52. "The Law" defeated Phyllis Thiemann with 59 percent of the vote, 2,917 to 2,057. Lindland was in New York on Wednesday to promote Affliction. After briefly celebrating his nomination, he left for the airport at 5 a.m. without his cell phone and was unavailable for comment.

Despite no previous political experience, Lindland was endorsed by The Oregonian newspaper and gained sympathy after Thiemann began running a negative campaign. Thiemann's consultant Elaine Franklin spread rumors that Lindland was a convicted felon - a bald-faced lie. When confronted, Thiemann's camp refused to issue a letter of apology.
Lindland, 36, had been convicted of a misdemeanor for stealing $29.65 worth of groceries... when he was 19.
"We were completely shocked," Angie Lindland said. "Matt was like 'They should have told me the rules from the get-go. I didn't realize this was like a fight.' But we were also very surprised to see how many people came to his defense."
Lindland will face Democrat Susan VanOrman for the open seat in November. Lindland is best known for winning a silver medal in Greco-Roman wrestling at the 2000 Olympics. He earned the nickname "The Law" after suing the Olympic Committee for a spot on the team.

I heard about that. Depending on his views: I doubt he'll be elected. Right now: Most (read as 99%) republicans are EXTREME right-wing. This puts a VERY bad taste in the mouths of the voters in Portland.

He stole groceries? Political views aside, I don't that's fair enough to be held against him. If he's from a poor family, then you have to do what you have to in order to survive. He should have equal opportunity to go through the election. I actually applaud an individual with no political background to seek a position like this. We need to get rid of those money-mongers in high places.
Now if he has douchebag policies, then it only makes sense that he isn't elected.

I looked at his site. He's not going to be in my district. He talks about change, but he's not saying what he's going to do. He just says there's an issue.

I'd vote for an Olympic medalist over some career politician any day!

It's a nice novelty he's using. But once he gets in office he's got to actually DO something. My issue with most MMO fighters: They sound and act like your typical JOCK in highschool. They can fight, but they have the IQ of a punch-drunk prize fighter.

The average MMA fighter is much more intelligent than the average boxer. What you see on TV in interviews are the antics to sell fights or the stupid kids trying to get into this sport solely for money.
Frankly almost everyone in elected office should be fired! They are selling out this country to international interests and our rights are fading awake faster than you could drink a shot.
Martial Law is going into affect gradually more every single day.
Remember freedom of speech? It seems to only exist online these days.
Frankly it is the citizens of this nation's job to fight for its rights. Sitting on an ass and wishing for change in one's government well yield that same results as wishing for a higher fitness level.

Freedom of what? Oh, you can't say that. It's unpatriotic.
/Sarcasm. //Smack if you thought otherwise.

Ever seen the MMO reality show for the UFC? Look at Tito or Frank or most of the kids trying to get into the sport. Dana's usually the most intelligent one. (Not knocking him, but the crowd he's around isn't very bright) I'm just saying: I'm not going to vote for someone because they're an athlete. (Jesse 'The Body' Ventura comes to mind here) I'd rather see someone in there that knows how to manipulate the game and win at it, instead of trying to pummel his way through it.

I love how you call it MMO
I'd rather see someone who is physically/mentally fit in office who is primarily independent like Jesse "The Mind" Ventura (who won running as a true independent) or Matt "The Law" Lindland (who ran without whoring out their name for campaign donations) instead of any left or right scum bag that is basically in the grand scheme of things just two sides of the same damn coin. The 2 party system logically can't be called a Party because it is only 2 people which should then be called a couple. Both sides take turns selling this country out and I don't support either.
Hell one of our ex-presidents was good at Judo... Theodore Roosevelt
