Paul Buentello vs Gary ‘Big Daddy’ Goodridge Affliction fight in the works By: MMAmania
Aleksander Emelianenko was not cleared by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) earlier today on the eve of his scheduled fight with Paul Buentello because he did not meet the mandatory medical licensing requirements.
Affliction MMA, which will stage its first-ever event dubbed “Banned” tomorrow at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., was left with the difficult task of finding a suitable opponent to replace the Russian on super short notice.
And MMAmania.com has learned that early UFC veteran and mixed martial arts journeyman Gary ‘Big Daddy’ Goodridge has answered the call.
Goodridge — who was also an arm wrestling world champion in a prior life — has dropped his last two bouts. In fact, he has lost three of his last five contests. However, he does have experience and some skills to make this fight interesting.
Let’s just hope the 42-year-old has been training and isn’t just being peeled off his couch.
Of course, Goodridge will also have to pass the same medical tests that Emelianenko failed; therefore, this bout is not set in stone … just a work in progress.
Stay tuned for more details. del.icio.us:Paul Buentello vs Gary 'Big Daddy' Goodridge Affliction fight in the works digg:Paul Buentello vs Gary 'Big Daddy' Goodridge Affliction fight in the works 14 Comments July 18th, 2008 UFC Fight Night weigh-in results for ‘Silva vs. Irvin’; Irvin fails to make weight on first attempt By: MMAmania
ufc fight night 14 weigh in
Fighters today tipped the scales for UFC Fight Night 14: “Silva vs. Irvin” in the ballrooms located on the second floor of the Fantasy at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.
James Irvin — who will take on UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva in a non-title light heavyweight tilt — failed to make the 206-pound limit, coming in a pound and a half over (207.5). He was allowed an hour to drop the excess baggage and came in at 206 pounds.
Here are the official results:
205 lbs.: Anderson Silva (206) vs. James Irvin (206) 205 lbs.: Brandon Vera (204) vs. Reese Andy (206) 155 lbs.: Frank Edgar (155) vs. Hermes Franca (155) 265 lbs.: Cain Velasquez (236) vs. Jake O’Brien (236) 170 lbs.: Anthony Johnson (170) vs. Kevin Burns (171) 185 lbs.: Jesse Taylor (184) vs. CB Dollaway (186) 170 lbs.: Rory Markham (170) vs. Brodie Farber (171) 185 lbs.: Nate Loughran (183) vs. Johnny Rees (183) 170 lbs.: James Giboo (170) vs. Brad Blackburn (170) 155 lbs.: Dale Hartt (156) vs. Shannon Gugerty (156) 185 lbs.: Tim Credeur (185) vs. Cale Yarbrough (186)

Aleksander Emelianenko failed to meet the medical licensing requirements and will be unable to compete against Paul Buentello tomorrow night at the Affliction: “Banned” event at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.
MMAmania.com just confirmed the bad news with California State Athletic Commission Executive Director, Armando Garcia, directly.
The state has very strict medical privacy laws; therefore, Mr. Garcia was unable to elaborate on the situation.
He did mention that the CSAC would help find and license a new opponent for Buentello if the fighter and the promotion are interested; however, with the event slated to begin in about 24 hours the window of opportunity is real small.
The heavyweight slugfest between Emelianenko and Buentello was supposed to be the featured bout on the Fox Sports Net telecast — there’s no word yet on how it will look with this latest news.

James Irvin has essentially been in the spotlight in the run up to the main event at UFC Fight Night 14 on July 19. Now it’s time for the “Spider” to finally get in on the action:
Better late than never. del.icio.us:Anderson Silva video on James Irvin UFC Fight Night fight digg:Anderson Silva video on James Irvin UFC Fight Night fight 22 Comments July 18th, 2008 Dana White: Rampage Jackson ‘went on some crazy fasting thing’ By: Mike Trask
Dana White provided additional comments on the Quinton “Rampage” Jackson arrest and hospitalization this morning on the Opie & Anthony Show on XM Radio.
Among the odder moments of the nearly 12-minute appearance was White, the UFC president, noting Jackson was “born again” in 2003.
Jackson’s actions (partying in Las Vegas included) over the past few days don’t seem fit in with the Christian tradition and certainly don’t provide any answers for his recent behavior.
However, his bizarre diet during that time might provide some clues.
“He went on some crazy fasting thing,” White said. “He didn’t drink anything but water and energy drinks for four or five days. He didn’t sleep a lot.”
It’s obviously not a clinical diagnosis. But it’s the closest thing to an explanation that’s been offered by anybody close with the former UFC champion to date.
We can only assume that White mentioned religion as a way of saying that Jackson’s a good person — an opinion that is shared by most people in MMA.
White said Jackson is still in a hospital undergoing a psychological examination.
“He’s alright,” White said. “When the thing happened it made no sense to me at all.”
Then: “I don’t know what he’s going through right now. He’s a friend of mine. He’s a good guy.”
Jackson, a father of four, becoming a born-again Christian has been noted in numerous publications over the past year. His trainer, Juanito Ibarra, is also a born-again Christian. del.icio.us:Dana White: Rampage Jackson 'went on some crazy fasting thing' digg:Dana White: Rampage Jackson 'went on some crazy fasting thing' 40 Comments July 18th, 2008 Affliction Banned fight card to possibly air in its entirety on FSN and PPV By: MMAmania
There’s a general consensus among mixed martial arts fans who typically pony up $40 to watch a pay-per-view (PPV) broadcast that he or she should be entitled to see all the fights on the card.
That doesn’t usually happen because of time restraints and other “in show” productions such as fight previews, interviews, commercials for upcoming shows, ring entrances and so on.
However, Affliction will look to buck that trend with its debut event dubbed “Banned,” which will air for free on Fox Sports Net in the United States at 8 p.m. ET and at the same time on The Fight Network in Canada and then transition to a paid pay-per-view (PPV) broadcast at 9 p.m. ET.
Indeed, Affliction has informed MMAmania.com that the upstart promotion will shoot to televise all the fights live on the mixed broadcast. However, and this is important, there is no guarantee that all fights will air.
Here’s how it will work:
Preliminary Card (Fox Sports Net):
265 lbs.: Paul Buentello (25-10) vs. Aleksander Emelianenko (13-3) 185 lbs.: Vitor Belfort (16-8) vs. Terry Martin (16-4) 145 lbs.: Mark Hominick (15-8) vs. Savant Young (9-7)
Main card (Televised on PPV):
265 lbs.: Fedor Emelianenko (27-1) vs. Tim Sylvia (24-4) 265 lbs.: Andrei Arlovski (12-5) vs. Ben Rothwell (29-5) 265 lbs.: Josh Barnett (21-5) vs. Pedro Rizzo (16-7) 185 lbs.: Matt Lindland (20-5) vs. Fabio Nascimento (8-3) 205 lbs.: Renato “Babalu” Sobral (29-7) vs. Mike Whitehead (20-5)
Swing bouts (To be featured on PPV if time permits):
205 lbs.: Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (13-3) vs. Edwin DeWees (35-12) 185 lbs.: Justin Levens (9-8) vs. Ray Lazama 170 lbs.: J.J. Ambrose (9-1) vs. Mike Pyle (16-5-1)
Affliction essentially has a four-hour block on PPV to feature eight fights; however, there are all of the other “in show” responsibilities that also need to be addressed. In particular, there is a mini Megadeth concert slated to take place during the presentation (in addition to all of the other stuff mentioned above).
Therefore, the swing bouts “may” be used if time permits and the promotion will work hard to squeeze them in. However, there are no guarantees … just like with any other PPV we have watched in the past.
Affliction “Banned” is set for the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on Saturday, July 19, 2008. “I know that this fight will show who is going to lose. The event will sell it this way, two unbeaten guys. I wanna do a great fight, a great show.”
– Lyoto Machida via Tatame.com
“It’ll be a good fight, we’re determined fighters. I trained a lot and I’ll do my job. I believe it’ll be a fight with more strategy. Lyoto likes to escape, fight moving backwards, it’s his style, but it’ll do my job…. I can’t say that I like (facing Brazilian fighters), but I want the belt, and wanna prove my talent and win. I want the belt. I already can fight for the belt. I’ve already showed UFC what I can and what I can’t do. I’m here to fight for the belt.”
– Thiago Silva via Tatame.com
Lyoto Machida and Thiago Silva comment for the first time on their huge 205-pound showdown at UFC 89: “Bisping vs. Leben” at The National Indoor Arena (NIA) in Birmingham, England, on October 18. The winner of the bout will likely earn a title shot in early 2009.

Quoteworthy:
“The Thiago Alves vs. Diego Sanchez match earmarked for 10/18 in Birmingham, England will not be taking place on the show. The Thiago Silva vs. Lyoto Machida match announced yesterday was to take its place. We don’t have an update yet on the status of Alves-Sanchez, other than the match has not been signed.”
Dave Meltzer reports that the welterweight showdown between Sanchez and Alves is not going to happen in Birmingham as previously reported. The good news is that is doesn’t mean it is off altogether — hopefully it’s just postponed until a later date. Recently I thought about the ghetto like areas that people I knew in high school lived while I was in a decent neighborhood/house. It makes no sense to raise a family in a place like that and currently i know of a guy that makes enough to buy in a house or live in the best apartments but chooses to live in a low income housing project (scam artist).
