Hey, I was just wondering what you guys say to explain KMFDM or Pig when this type of convo happens (i seem to have atleast one a week)
idiot:"what music do u like" me:"KMFDM" idiot:"KFM Dee what??" me: "KMFDM" idiot: 'what type of music is that?"
Problem is if u say industrial rock or whatever, that draws a equally blank look, and another "what?"
and i havn't had any sucsess saying well their like X or y, cos either they havn't heard of them or its not really true.
or should I just not bother trying?
U guys run into the same problem? if so what do u do?

yes i know exactly what you mean dude. and usually it gets turned into kfm sumthing sumthin, lol. i have gotten to the point of just simply explaining to people that i like music they have never heard of, or if they have...they don't like it, lol. i have turned a few people on to kmfdm and pig, but most are just too warped into the mainstream icons.

yeah bodyhammer its hard isn't, its not like u could say well, they're the ultra heavy beat, that would draw a really blank and a WTF??
a few times ive tried saying "well the closest thing you would of heard is Nine inch nails (which really isn't that close at all..) but a couple of times ive said thats and usually the only nin song theve heard is closer, and they reply with "oh so its heavy metal then..."
argh...

This rarely happens to me. I'd keep a burnt copy of your favorite KMFDM and PIG tracks and give them out when asked. Many stores here have stations where you can scan cds and listen to clips. Most people here like pop rock, master p rap crap and little girl music though.

thats a good idea, i think ill try it, although ive found that alot of these discussions happen when im working (stacking shelves-good old monkey work) so its not really possible sometimes however for the others ill give it a try.

My friends used to try to pronounce KMFDM like it was a word. Eventually most of them have gotten turned on to the ultra heavy beat. Most of the guys I work with said that they have heard of them but never heard them. So I played some of their stuff at work and since a couple have bought a few cd's..

The best way I can describe it is KMFDM is the band that NIN, Rob Zombie, and any band like them, wish they could be. I know that's like comparing a Corvette to a Cavalier but it's the easiest way for me to explain it to the uneducated masses.

I usually tell people that I listen to KMFDM but then point out that they wouldn't know what KMFDM is. Also, I usually have a KMFDM or Pig CD with me at school because I've been exchanging CDs temporarily with one of my friends and then I can show people a CD if they don't know what I'm talking about.

I know that's like comparing a Corvette to a Cavalier but it's the easiest way for me to explain it to the uneducated masses. i compair my cav to corvettes all the time. its not so hard its like this. take electronic funky sounds, or "synth" like from the song toxic by britney spears, add lots of bass guitar, with heavy guitar rifts, like from "metalica" mix it with a heavy fast kinda dancy beat like from techno, and thats industrial. and people go "oh... you're weird" the key is just talking in terms they understand, yea its not really a techno beat, and no the guitar work isnt at all like metalica, nor the synth britney. but they are all terms people understand, so they can make a picture in their head... and it will probably look alot like ohgr ^__^

(im compiling a cd of "introduction to KMFDM right now" what would ur recomendations be? cheers Juke-Joint-Jezebel. I think that song probably introduced more people to KMFDM than any other song. Also, Megalomaniac would be good if you use an edit of it, like the version on the music video or the one on the MK:A soundtrack because they are shorter.

whenever people ask me what bands I like I say things like kmfdm, pig, thrill kill kult, skinny puppy, I get wierd looks. they say what type of music is that. ohh boy. industrial. more wierd looks. err, it's kinda experimental electronic, hitting stuff to make noises. err think of a live performance vacum cleaner band. boy that gets strange music. then I say combine every other music. synth stuff, techno beats, rock guitar, classic instruments, strange combinations of music. And I get more strange looks. and a lot of 'okay sure', and 'nevermind', and 'sounds strange'. usually i give up trying to actually explain industrial and I say, have you heard of NIN, or Rammstien, good they are slightly industrialish. And that is the best I can do. But it is usually a fun conversation. I guess I enjoy explaining the unexplainable. The worst was when I was listening to some ohgr this summer and some girl was like its techno. grr. goddamnit everything about the music that was technoish was stuff that the techno genre got from industrial. and she just couldn't understand that this was not just techno. but she did admit that it was very strange techno. which is a start.

A few days ago, someone asked me what bands I listen to and when I mentioned Skinny Puppy, she said it was a mean name because "that sounds like you are starving a dog." I just shook my head and walked away. She also thought Pig was an odd name for a band.

Thats hilarious. But I have had people say it's a strange name. On the other hand. I'm the same way. I remember the first time I saw an N'Sync cd. it was in someones car and it was there little bothers cd. i picked up the case and said 'what is this N-S-Y-N-C, some kind of KMFDM ripoff", they had to explain to my it was not spelled out just one word, and they were some famous boy band. Strange, it's like looking through the mirror or something.

When I get asked the question about what I listen then what KMFDM is, I just say industrial. I figure If it goes any farther than that a new fan might be born. If it ends there it their loss.

I don't explain it, I like to leave them in agony. I'm in an industrial band, and there are those snotty music majors at my school that thinks it's utter shit, and I love that! I feed off of confusion and atrocity. Bring it on!
