Okay, it's rare I start a topic here. Actually, I'm not sure if I've ever started a topic This thread only applies to the hardcore Pig junkies out there. And I know several are on this forum... So I was curious about this. Where does your collection stop? What stuff are you NOT interested in?
For me, I wanted at least one edition of all Pig releases. Then any alternate version with some significant difference. Example, both Wreckeds, original and remastered Poke/Strolls. I also generally try to get all releases on all available formats. But it's not a huge priority (ex: I'd kinda like to grab PTL on vinyl, but I've skipped the chance a bunch of times). However, stuff I do not really care about are pretty much exact duplicates on different labels. I have a couple (US/JP Sinsation), but in general I avoid it. I don't really have much interest in grabbing the German editions of Never For Fun/Poke/Sick City. No major purpose in owning them. Especially in the pricetags some can carry. Don't wanna pay $40 just so I can have something I already own, only with a different record label logo plastered on it.
I collect all the remixes Ray does, as well as significant guest appearances (if he wrote the track, does vox, etc.). Ex: Schaft, H3llb3nt, Sakurai Atsushi. I however don't care about pursuing something if he just did additional programming, performs bass, engineering, etc. I can't just buy something soley because his name is somewhere in the credits. That's pointless to me. Example of stuff I don't really have much interest in would be the Psychic TV stuff, Neubauten, The Hit Parade, etc.
Then as far as compilations, I'll only buy it if the content is exclusive (Sick City comp, KMFDM tribute, etc). If the track is on something I already have, I could care less about getting it. I actually knew a guy who would buy *any* compilation Ray/Pig appeared on, even if the track was just off one of his albums. Thought that was ridiculous. In general, I also try to buy all compilitions for dirt cheap used, since I only want the one track (same if possible for items where I'm just buying it for 1 remix).
Even with KMFDM, I only really care about having one edition of the stuff Ray is on. Like I own Nihil on CD. Don't care about getting the Juke Joint Jezebel single(s), or imports of Nihil or anything. No reason to. I'm not a harcore KMFDM fan like most Pig fans are. Don't really even own/care about most KMFDM material that Ray isn't involved with.
I know some of you guys here do indeed pursue some of that stuff that I'm not interested in. That's cool, I'm not condemning it. I myself have a crazy collection. But speaking as a person who has spent hundreds (thousands?) on his Pig collection, I know there's a point where I'll feel pretty satisfied with what I've got. (I mostly already do.) Just wondering where you guys draw your line. After all, I think you could keep on spending and collecting forever and still not get *everything*. At some point, you're just wasting lots of money
And as a spin-off discussion, how many other groups are you a completionist with? Pig is the only one I'm really too hardcore about. I didn't even originally intend to be. But through getting semi-involved with the Pig camp (running Blue Noise, The Pig Pen, Pig discog, etc), I started coming into lots of rare things. Eventually I wanted to have everything. But it's only if I truly love a band, do I bother to get all their releases. I have every NIN release, every comp they've appeared on (w/exclusive material anyway), etc. But I mostly only 1 version of each release. There's a handful of bands I do that with. But for the bulk of artists, I only care about albums, or maybe EPs if it has mostly new tracks.
